MTN, Glo, 9mobile and Airtel Set To Increase Call Tariff and Data Plans

We still complaining that our Data Plans are damn expensive and Telecoms are still working on increasing both call tariff and data plan. As Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) set to implement Cybercrime Prohibition and Prevention Act 2015 of section Section 44, to all banks for the collection of 0.005% levy on all electronic transactions into a National Cyber Security Fund.

In Executing, this will also affect other businesses like the GSM service providers and all telecom companies, including MTN, Glo, Airtel and MTN e.t.c. Banks and other financial institutions and Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE).

According to the Cybercrime Phrohibition and Prevention Act 2015 of section 44 states that;

There shall be paid and credited into the Fund established under subsection (1) of this section and domiciled in the Central Bank of Nigeria: a levy of 0.005 per cent of all electronic transactions by the businesses specified in the second schedule to this Act.

According to Mr. Olusola Teniola, the President of the Association of the Telecom companies of Nigeria (ATCON), said “there is no choice but the only way to survive with the new levy is to pass the cost to the subscribers” and he added that “Nigerians should be ready to pay more for calls and data subscriptions“. With such burden, operators might just consider downsizing their staffs strength to stay afloat.
