MTN in new partnership with China Mobile, Chipmaker Unisoc and software developer – KaiOS to launch a new 3G smart feature smartphone to Africa. MTN plan to be launching the device in the quarter year of 2019.
Reasons for this device is that MTN believes that large portion of subscribers still uses 3G network device in Africa. So Nigeria, Ghana and South Africa will be few of the countries where MTN will roll out the device.
Talking about the device, It will include rear and front-facing cameras, and key Google applications which run on KaiOS. These include Search, Maps, Assistant, and YouTube. it will also feature 2000mAh battery capacity which boosts to offer upto two weeks of standby time and 2 – 5 days of life under usage.
No brand name has been decided for the gadget but CEO Rob Shuter Speaking at AfricaCom said that he is addicted to acronyms so he looked at the names of the companies — MTN, Unisoc, China Mobile, and KaiOS — for inspiration.
“All I came up with was MUCH, which won’t win any marketing awards,” he said.
The Smartphone will be priced around $20 (N7200) said MTN.
